Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of anaphoric and cataphoric references in Sundanese oral discourse found in the YouTube content of the Rais Nada channel, as well as to explain their functions in building cohesion and clarity of meaning within the discourse. This research is grounded in the importance of understanding grammatical cohesion as a fundamental element of textual unity that also reflects communicative practices and cultural values of the Sundanese community. A qualitative method with a descriptive approach was employed. The data were obtained from dialogues in the episode “Sahur Pertama di Bulan Ramadhan Bareng Keluarga Kaulinan Barudak Baheula” using an observational method with note-taking techniques. Utterances containing referential elements were transcribed, identified, and classified based on types of reference, namely anaphora and cataphora. Data analysis was conducted using the distributional method through stages of identification, classification, and description to explain the forms, functions, and contextual occurrences of references within the flow of discourse. The findings indicate that anaphoric references are used more dominantly than cataphoric references. Anaphora appears in the form of personal, demonstrative, possessive, and comparative pronouns, functioning to maintain topic continuity in discourse. Meanwhile, cataphora occurs less frequently and generally functions as an introducer of new information, a marker of emphasis, and a trigger for contextual humor. The study concludes that the use of endophoric references plays a significant role in constructing coherence in oral discourse and reflects the familiar and polite communicative characteristics of Sundanese society.
